“Almost Home by Frank Marcopolos is a fun and fast-paced novel about the seedy side of student life on a college campus in upstate New York—a netherworld, like any college town, where young adults create lives for themselves, yet are too young to realize the consequences of their actions.Almost Home keeps you in its thrall. The language rings true—and reads seamlessly within each character’s alternating chapters. The vivid atmosphere settled me in a sleepy burg where the cultural and social center was the college. The powerful and vivid atmosphere, much the same as when I was in college, although much more hypnotic and alluring, goes further. It seduces one to remain on the cusp of adulthood forever. In Almost Home that powerful temptation seems possible—at the price of selling one’s soul.” — Kathleen Maher, Author of Diary of a Heretic

Almost Home

Readers who like sports themes and coming-of-age stories will enjoy the novel Almost Home by Frank Marcopolos.

I enjoyed Marcopolos’ short stories featuring college students Enzo and Shannon in his prior work, the short story collection Infinite Ending.

Enzo, a pitcher at a D-3 school, pursues high-maintenance Jenny, an It Girl he meets at a costume party, and ends up clashing with a cadre of evil frat boys when an unexpected death ruins everyone’s evening.

The tension builds between Enzo and his nemesis Barry, the fraternity president, as they match wits in their mutual pursuit of the girl, various business schemes, and glory on the baseball diamond.

Marcopolos has a penchant for inventive adverbs. The dialogue is full of quick, entertaining banter, and his characters’ voices are distinct.

After reading Infinite Ending, I looked forward to reading more about Enzo and Shannon. Her character is more clingy than she seemed to be in the short stories, but the end of Almost Home suggests there is more to come in Enzo and Shannon’s story.

I had a hard time putting this book down. I found myself rooting for Enzo despite of, and almost because of, his flaws and weaknesses. Even the 'villain' Barry had me in his corner one chapter, then wishing for his downfall the next. I thoroughly enjoyed this journey through college life as seen through the eyes of characters that have their flaws, yet kept me wanting to know what was going to happen to them next. And the ending....WOW!
I didn't expect to like this book because I felt out of the `demographic', being in my mid-40's and grown away from the college scene for two decades. But aside from passing over the requisite expletives, I found myself interested and curious about these characters anyway, wanting to turn the page, needing to know how it all ends. Somehow, even though these are "jocks" and "frat boys" and such, there is enough individuality and space for unpredictability, a story worth listening to. I have to admit, I was engrossed and almost missed stops on the subway, growing annoyed at myself that I had become so drawn into such a plebeian world! Go take a ride, read this book.
Once I started reading this book, I just couldn't stop. "Almost Home" by Frank Marcopolos is a wonderful story set in the college town of New Paltz, New York. The story is cleverly split between the 2 point of views of the main characters Enzo and Budski. Both characters are on the baseball team, but the story is not entirely about baseball - it's about the wants and needs of these two and what they are willing to do to fulfill them.
Enzo, who appears to be the "nice" boy, immediately falls in love with (or in lust with) Jennifer who happens to be dating Budski. Budski, who runs one of the campus fraternities, just uses Jenny for his own personal gains. Jenny, also known as "Jenny Drama" seems to play with both of them throughout the story.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who has lived the college life, fell in love, survived the ups and downs, and struggled to be something or someone better.
Here's the thing. I don't like baseball--not a bit. And I had no desire to read a book about college students and their escapades. But, I bought Almost Home after joking around with Frank Marcopolos on Twitter.

Okay, so now the book is in my and I feel obligated to at least give it a try. Protagonist is over testosteroned, but I keep turning the pages. Finished the book. It's well written and if it's your sort of thing, you'll like it--a lot.
This book was great! It was a good combination of the dynamics of playing collegiate sports and the drama that makes up college life off the field. I thought both Enzo and Budski were really engaging characters that kept my attention. They were believable to me. The contrast between the two made for a compelling story. I thought the plot flowed well and the narrative had substance. Overall, fantastic book, whether you're into baseball or not. i think this will appeal to pretty much anyone who'd be interested in a good story set against a campus background.
